Times Square Terrorist Plot Foiled
This Monday, a man was arrested in Brooklyn, New York for conspiring to join ISIS and carry out a Nice-style attack using a garbage truck in Times Square. U.S. prosecutors stated that thirty-seven-year-old Mohamed Rafik Naji traveled to Turkey and Yemen last year in efforts to join the terrorist group, but was allegedly denied access to the surrounding areas controlled by ISIS. In an email sent to his girlfriend, Naji wrote “It’s very hard to get in I’m on my 5 try its difficult mad po po military and ppl here very scared.” He also told a confidential source of his sinister plans for an attack. “I was saying if there is a truck, I mean a garbage truck and one drives it there to Times-Square and crushes them shshshshshsh…Times-Square day…” His arrest comes just months after Mohamed Lahouaiej-Bouhlel plowed down a crowded esplanade in Nice, France, killing 87 people and injuring over 400 with the ISIS-inspired attack.
ISIS has been encouraging lone wolf attacks in crowded areas, such as the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade—calling it an “excellent target.” Meanwhile, NYPD has been ramping up security efforts in high-traffic areas including Times Square and the route along the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Security officials are on high alert nationwide.
